I went to the Kingston BA Graduate Show last week. Because what I am doing at the moment was quite similar to one of their department- Illustration Animation. Basically, the class structure can be seen as the same of animation, but their works were more poetical and artistic. In the exhibition, lots of students displayed their works used a A1 wood board. Followed by personal sketches, hand-drawn and development bibles, I can easily figure out their working process. One of my favorite one was talking about the story of a single father. The animator got inspiration from a network forum that lots of single father shared their everyday life on the platform.

Storyboard

In her design bible, I know that how did she brought up this ideas to make an animation for a bunch of single fathers. For the storyboard, it caused her 3 months to make a final version. After discussed with her tutors, she refined the whole story for at least 5 times. The creator- Jade Evans made every transitions became so meaningful and sentiment. There was a scene that a father ate a microwave food lonely in the kitchen, and he could not help but keep think about his son. The cinematography successfully conveyed a touched feeling to the audience.

Character Design

The idea of the model was came from her father. Evans lived with her mom, and she told me she wanna make the film as a gift to her father. In the description of character design, Evans tried to mimic her father's feeling while she animated the character.
